Uses for WebQuest
Mood:  energetic
I am glad to put to practice what I am learning, I came up with an idea today to use a webquest for teaching health. I am going to have the students reseearch a disease and then give a report to the class. I put the WebQuest on my website under quick webquests.

Back To Work
Mood:  sad
The week off has been good, I feel revitalized. The trip to DC helped and has left me with some good memories. I am looking forward to getting back to work and beginning to teach health. I think this is going to be the most important thing I can teach all year. The students need to have a better understanding of the impact their life style will have on their overall health. I am a little nervous to talk about obescity, one of my students who loves science especially biology is obese. He is also already having complications with his heart.

Mood:  celebratory
The simulation activity went soooo well. The students followed the directions and were very excited and interested. The activity came from a NYS required LE lab, called "The becks of Finches" in this activity we simulate competition and survival of the fitest. The kids are given a beck the beck could be a pair of tweezers, barrett, large paper clip, or even a pair of thongs. I placed a container of lentils in the center of the table and they would initially just try to collect as many seeds from the container as possible and if they survive that is eat enough food they can stay on that "island" otherwise they would have to go to another island. Eventually I had 9 kids on one island competing from the same container of lentils. They were so set on winning many of them cheated (this also happened in the high school) but regardless they understood the concepts by the end of the simulation.

They also learned that their behavior in the classroom can affect what lesson I can do with them. For example if they are not cooperating we could not have accomplished a simulation like this.

Sick Day
Mood:  a-ok
Savannah is not feeling well enough for school so we are calling in sick. I took her to the doctor but she couldn't find anything wrong. She has had a cough for a week and constant headaches. I think she just needed the day, and so did I.

As a result of the issues in the class I created a writing assignment to replace the fun activity/simulation I had prepared. I will try again. The students hated the writing but I don't think I will have a problem again. I also made them write the assignment in cursive. They did an excellent job, it seems the more I push them to write in cursive the more effort they put into it, their writing is definitely improving.

Tuesday AM Difficulties
Mood:  irritated
AM does not stand for the morning. A is for Anthony and M is his last name. This poor kid is sooooo ODD (oppositional defiance disorder) in every setting, I was reading more about it today I am not a psychologist or psychiatrist but I really think for him it will probably turn into a conduct disorder.

His behavior is so disruptive to the entire class. Diana said before lunch "We are going to have a bad Gym class today" When I asked why she just said the initials AM. The entire class is off when he is in school.

Job Share for 2006-2007
Mood:  surprised
Well the propoasal went well, but the assignment is a bit of a surprise. We are sharing a 3-4 self-contained class a mix of LD and ED students. We are a little surprised that they would do this because many of the ED kids require consistency. I will be teaching on Monday and Tuesday and my partner will be teaching on Wed, Thurs, and Friday. A positive on this type of arrangement is that the teachers will not get burned out so easily.

CSE DAY
Mood:  not sure
Today was a day full of CSE meetings. They went well, I was glad to meet one of the parents, she is interested and involved in her son's life. The other when we made suggestions about helping her son to bring his homework to school she said she was to busy and disorganized to make a list or try to help him remember. The last parent did not show, which was not a surprise.

I am trying to job share again next year, my partner presented to school based planning today. I hope it goes well

Mood:  happy
We finished the DRA's this week, we needed to see where the kids to see where they are in the spectrum. We were informed that all students who are not at grade level (6th) by the end of the year will not move on to 7th grade. All of my special education students are not at grade level and I personally feel they should not go on. They need a year of reading and writing only. They are so far behind. Four of them are reading at 1-2nd grade level. One is at a third grade level, her reading is very good but when you ask her to summarize what she has read she can't do it.

First Day of Spring
Mood:  bright
Anthony came back today, he was permanently kicked off the bus so no one brought him to school in over two weeks. He came in with his usual attitude toward school. He left with the school psychologist around 11 and did not return until lunch. As we walked to lunch I asked him to stop talking once and warned him he would have to go back to the class, again he talked and I sent him back. He did go back but told the other teacher he forgot his lunch card and proceeded to run around the hallway.
Another day another referral.....
